Nestled just 40 miles off the coast of Venezuela, Curacao is a captivating Caribbean paradise that beckons travelers with its sun-kissed beaches, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes. With pristine white sand beaches, two stunning national parks, a world-renowned distillery, and unparalleled scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities, Curacao offers a treasure trove of experiences for every type of traveler. As a travel enthusiast, I find myself drawn to Curacao repeatedly, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a Caribbean destination outside of the hurricane belt.
Getting Around Curacao: Tips for Seamless Exploration
By Taxi:
Navigating Curacao by taxi is safe and convenient, but it's crucial to ensure you're riding with an officially licensed taxi. Look for license plates starting with "TX" followed by the taxi number. Remember, Curacao taxis don’t have digital meters, so it’s essential to agree on a fare with your driver before embarking on your journey.
Rental Car:
For those eager to explore every corner of this beautiful island, renting a car is your best bet. Taxis can be costly if used frequently, so having a rental car offers both freedom and savings. During our trip, we opted for Hertz, conveniently located at the airport for easy pick-up and drop-off. The Hertz staff was friendly and even upgraded us to a better vehicle at no extra charge—a delightful start to our adventure!

Where to Stay: Curacao Marriott Beach Resort
Just a 15-minute drive from Hato International Airport, the Curacao Marriott Beach Resort is a luxurious waterfront haven. As you step into the grand open-air lobby, you're greeted by breathtaking views of the azure waters. With four diverse restaurants, even the pickiest eaters will find something to delight their palate. The resort boasts two inviting pools—one family-friendly and one adults-only—and a pristine beach perfect for snorkeling among vibrant coral and tropical fish. The staff's exceptional hospitality ensures your stay is nothing short of extraordinary. In the evenings, unwind with live music and plush seating at the lobby bar, an ideal spot for relaxation and socializing.
Unmissable Adventures: Top Things to Do in Curacao
Shete Boka National Park:
Discover the raw beauty of Curacao at Shete Boka National Park, where rugged landscapes meet the open ocean. Two scenic trails, each about an hour long, guide you through four captivating viewpoints: Boka Tabla, Boka Pistol, Boka Wandomi, and Boka Kalki. Time your visit to Boka Kalki right, and you might witness sea turtles nesting—a truly magical experience. At Boka Wandomi, marvel at the island’s natural bridge, while Boka Tabla invites you to explore its enchanting underwater cavern. My personal favorite, Boka Pistol, dazzles with waves crashing into an inlet and shooting back like a powerful pistol blast. It’s an awe-inspiring spectacle you won’t want to miss.
Swimming with Sea Turtles:
Curacao is a sea turtle lover's dream, with prime snorkeling spots at Playa Piskado, Playa Lagun, and Tugboat Beach. Playa Lagun is renowned for its excellent snorkeling, nestled between dramatic cliffs. Arrive early in the morning for the best chance to encounter these gentle creatures. While sea turtle sightings aren’t guaranteed, Playa Piskado offers the highest likelihood, thanks to local fishermen who toss fish scraps into the waters, attracting these magnificent animals.
Tugboat Beach:
Tugboat Beach might not be your typical sunbathing spot, with its coral-covered shore and lively waves, but it’s a must-visit for its unique attractions. Groove to great music, savor delightful dishes at the cozy restaurant, and dive into the underwater world at the dive shop. The highlight here is the sunken tugboat resting just 5 meters below the surface—a snorkeling and diving hotspot teeming with diverse marine life. For those with a creative streak, the "Be the Artist" experience lets you paint your own driftwood souvenir, guided by a talented local artist.
Cas Abao Beach:
Named one of the world's 21 most beautiful beaches by National Geographic, Cas Abao Beach is a slice of paradise you won't want to miss. With its crystal-clear waters, soft white sand, and a beach bar/restaurant, it’s the perfect place to unwind, snorkel, and soak up the sun all day long.
Kokomo Beach:
Channel your inner Beach Boy at Kokomo Beach, where you can truly "get away from it all." Sip on tropical cocktails from the on-site bar while lounging in style on beach chairs or cabanas. If you're feeling adventurous, dive into the crystal waters at the dive center and explore the vibrant underwater world.
Willemstad:
No trip to Curacao is complete without exploring its vibrant capital city, Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander through streets adorned with captivating street art, savor culinary delights at diverse restaurants, and shop for unique souvenirs. Be sure to visit the iconic Queen Emma Bridge—a floating pontoon bridge that swings open to let boats pass. The pastel-colored buildings offer picture-perfect moments both day and night, making Willemstad a photographer's paradise.
